Yeesh!

So, according to RaleighGasPrices.com, gas has hit $3 (at the most expensive station) for the triangle.

Lets figure this out…

My vehicle gets ~18mpg. My commute is about 10 miles each way and takes about 15 minutes (barring traffic). Thats 20 miles round trip. So, using the high price above, Im spending around $3 to $3.50 a day. Multiply that by (roughly) 20 work days per month, and thats $60 a month. (Of course, this does not cover the number of days I go to Raleigh or Chapel Hill after work…)

So, I considered some alternate methods of transit…

TTA
Triangle Transit has a bus that stops a ten minute walk from my house. I could take that to their hub and catch another bus that stops right outside my office. This would take roughly an hour each way. A 30 day bus pass is $65. My employer will reimburse me $30 a month towards a bus pass. So, my cost (in terms of dollars) is $35 a month.

In terms of time, it will cost me 90 minutes a day.

Now I have lived in and visited many cities with public transit systems that work. I am willing to walk a bit and give some extra time to take public transit. But, the cost/benefit ratio is just not there in this deal. Especially given the number of days a week I dont go straight home after work.

Buying a Motorcycle.
A motorcycle would increase my gas mileage to about 50 miles per gallon. 20 miles a day times 20 work days is 400 mile. Divided by 50 is 4 gallons of gas or $12 a month. On its face a good savings of $48 a month.

However, lets say I were to get a small used motorcycle for around $1000. I would then need to get helmet, etc. And take the safety class and get the endorsement. I figure around $2000 maybe $2500 when I am done. Then there is the insurance which would be around $200 a month.

So, I guess I’ll keep using my SUV for now…

Life, Don’t Talk To Me About Life

I realized something today… that I may have lived in the south too long.

Yes, I have become a biscuit snob. At lunch I ordered a biscuit on the side because it looked really good. Let us just say that it wasn’t. I mean the inside was light and flaky, and the outside was crisp. So, technically, it was everything a biscuit is supposed to be. It even had good taste. But, well, it just was not good. Not compared with some of the other biscuits I have had.

I mean, I know I am a bagel snob. But that makes sense. I grew up in the NYC metro area – there’s a bagel shop on every corner – at least. And I can recall the days before the baglel machine when you would go in and there would be a bubbe hand making the bagels – with upper arms wider then my legs due to the muscle strength the dough required.

But biscuits? I dont go out of my way to get biscuits. I almost never have any. So, why am I feeling snobish about them?

Pennsic – I know, I need to update about Pennsic. But, there’s not much to say really. I drove up on Friday, got caught in horrific traffic from Cranberry to Butler. And then, other then heralding two courts for TEs, and helping MOL the Atlantian 5 Man, basicly wandered around, socialized, and did nothing in particular (TM).

It was a good, uneventful, relaxing war. Just the kind of vacation I needed. And wish I was still having. Ho hum.

Work has not quite picked up the pace it was at prior to my heading off for Pennsic, but its still busy. Actually, its about the first lull we have seen since the merger, so we are all kind of relaxing as its not going to last.

It was a productive weekend – six loads of laundry, re-organized the linen closet, vacuumed the fish tanks, and watched ten episodes of The West Wing season three.

I had forgotten how powerful Isaac & Ishmael was. Wow.

BELOIT COLLEGE RELEASES THE BELOIT COLLEGE MINDSET LIST FOR THE CLASS OF 2009

Beloit, Wis. – In the coming weeks, millions of students will be entering college for the first time.  On average, these members of the Class of 2009 will be 18 years old, which means they were born in 1987.  Starbucks, souped-up car stereos, telephone voicemail systems, and Bill Gates have always been a part of their lives.
Each August, as students start to arrive, Beloit College releases the Beloit College Mindset List, which offers a world view of today’s entering college students. It is the creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and Director of Public Affairs Ron Nief.
McBride, who directs Beloit’s First Year Initiatives (FYI) program for entering students, notes that “This year’s entering students have grown up in a country where the main business has become business, and where terrorism, from obscure beginnings, has built up slowly but surely to become the threat it is today. Cable channels have become as mainstream as the “Big 3” used to be, formality in dress has become more quaint than ever, and Aretha Franklin, Kermit the Frog and Jimmy Carter have become old-timers.”
“Each year,” according to Nief, “ when Beloit releases the Mindset List, it is the birth year of the entering students that is the most disturbing fact for most readers. This year will come as no exception and, once again, the faculty will remain the same age as the students get younger.”
The list is distributed to faculty on campus during the New Student Days orientation.  According to McBride, “It is an important reminder, as faculty start to show signs of ‘hardening of the references,’ that we think about the touchstones and benchmarks of a generation that has grown up with CNN, home computers, AIDS awareness, digital cameras and the Bush political dynasty. We should also keep in mind that these students missed out on the pleasures of  being tossed in the back of a station wagon with a bunch of friends and told to keep the noise down, walking in the woods without fearing Lyme Disease, or setting out to try all of the 28 ice
cream flavors at Howard Johnson’s.”
According to Nief, “This is not serious in-depth research. It is meant to be thought- provoking and fun, yet accurate. It is as relevant as possible, given the broad social and geographic diversity of our students, who are drawn from every state and 50 countries.  It is always open to challenge, which has an additional benefit
in that it reminds us of students’ varied backgrounds. It is still a good reflection of the attitudes and experiences of the young people that we must be aware of from the first day of their college experience.”
