Computer

So, I have an old system… its a P2 with 256MB of RAM. It basically sits on the network and percolates and acts as a file server. It also runs some newsgroup monitoring software but nothing processor intensive. The problem is, over the past year or so, explorer.exe has been grabbing the CPU at 100% and I have to kill task on three or four tasks to get the pc back. I have re-imaged it multiple times with multiple OSes, flashed the BIOS, etc. No love. So, I decided enough was enough, I would go ahead and build a fairly inexpensive system to replace it. It has a DVD Rom and two IDE hard drives I can reuse. Bearing in mind that economy was the primary goal, this is what I have ordered:

Case
XION II XON-103 got good reviews and is on special. The problem is the 450 watt power supply only has 4 connectors. So, I have also ordered a power supply. This one has excellent reviews, and although slightly less wattage has sufficient connectors.

CPU
Like I said, this is going to be a simple file server with no real need for processing power, so I went with an AMD Semperon. Anandtech used this one in their entry level buyers guide so I feel pretty good about it.

System Board
I originally looked at the one Anandtech used in their buyers guide, but NewEgg had a combo deal with the new model up, so I have gone with a BIOSTAR TForce6100.

Memory
Well, I looked at the recommended and the reviews and what I know about reputations, and decided on 1×1GB of Corsair Value Select.

Hard Drive
Yes, I am planning to reuse the current IDE drives I have (a 20GB for OS and 250GB for data), but I decided to supplement it with a Western Digital 250GB SATA drive. First, cause well… more storage is always good and second because I have never played with SATA before.

Cables
Yes, this thing is going to have 4 fans in it (2 in the power supply and 2 in the case), but I still opted to go with round cables for better air flow. Nothing fancy – No LEDs in them or anything. Just 2 round SATA cables, 2 round three plug IDE cables, and a round floppy cable.

Yeah, a floppy – New Egg was throwing one in with the case at no charge so why not. Of course, they are bundling a beige floppy with a black case…. and I may not even install it.

Any thoughts?

Vehicle…

It was a simple plan… get to dealership by 8:15 catch the shuttle to work and get a lift back to the dealership after lunch from a co-worker. After all, it was only an oil change and an inspection. What could possibly go wrong?

Foolish mortal.

I arrive at the dealership at 8:15. No sweat. The shuttle leaves at 8:30 – plenty of time.

I go inside the service area and walk over to C, who I have been dealing with since I bought the car.

C: Hello, Mr A! What are we doing for you today?
N: Heya C! Just an oil change and inspection
C: OK, did you want to wait for it?
N: How long will it take?
C: We’ll have you out in an hour
N: Great! I’ll wait.

I go inside and sit down at one of the tables they have and bring up my laptop. Hmmm… no wireless… Ah! the SSID changed since last time. No problem, fix that and bam! network connection… at least so it would appear… but in fact there is no IP address. Release/Renew multiple times. Nothing. Bring up Ethereal – yup, DHCP Discover…silence…DHCP Discover…silence… rinse & repeat

OK, no big deal… work on some off line stuff. 9:30 comes and goes. Quarter to 10 I go over to find out whats up…

C: You’re still here?!?!
N: Yeah….
C: I thought you were done and gone
N: Ummm, no….

C goes off to find out what happened and well somehow somewhere the ball got dropped and my car wound up at the back of the queue. I get moved to the front and put on expedite and 1/2 hour later I have my car and I’m on my way. And they ate the cost of the oil change.

Of course I lost half a day of productive time and had to dial in to a TC on my cell phone from the dealership… but its all good.
